Hdeel Abdelhady will moderate an event on the links between emerging technology, national security, and financial services. The event, organized by the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists, will explore how national security-based concerns around emerging technologies play out in the financial services space. Program Description

On national security grounds, the United States has incrementally adopted laws and policies to restrict and scrutinize foreign sources of, and access to, emerging and other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, advanced semiconductors, and cyber capabilities. Those laws and policies include restrictions on foreign investment in U.S. critical technology businesses, prohibitions of information and communications technology and services transactions, export controls, and government and private supply chain restrictions. In addition, the United States has ramped up efforts to curb foreign access to individual and government-related data that may be used for malign purposes or by adversaries to advance their Artificial Intelligence capabilities.

These and related legal and policy measures restrict the inbound and outbound flows of certain technologies on national security grounds. How is the private sector responding? How do these efforts affect customers, clients, and consumers? Our panel will explore these issues, with a focus on practical issues from a financial services sector perspective.
